Situated under 14 latitude South between New Caledonia and Tahiti, the island of Futuna is part of the French overseas community of the Horn Islands which groups Wallis, Futuna and Alofi. Its 5000 inhabitants are connected to the rest of the world by the small airport of Pointe de Vele. In March 2010, Hurricane Tomas hit the tiny archipelago, causing extensive material damage, particularly on the island of Futuna. Above a beach at Pointe Vele, not far from the airport.
